The Academy Awards are the top honors for Hollywood movies and are also quite controversial. There have been many movies overlooked by the Oscars and here is a list of 10 blockbusters that failed to win Oscar.
Psycho (1960) – It was one of the scariest movies of its time but did not succeed in winning Oscar. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, Psycho tops the list of 100 most trilling American movies. It was nominated in four categories- Best Director, Best Art Direction, Best Actress in a Supporting Role and Best Cinematography.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994) – One of the best American classics, The Shawshank Redemption tells the story of two men who became best friends in prison while serving their life sentences. The movie starred Morgan Freeman, Tim Robbins and Bob Gunton. Despite getting seven Oscar nominations including Best Actor, this prison drama did not win a single Oscar.
Once Upon a Time in America (1984)– The movie stars Robert De Niro and James Woods and tells the story of the lives of four gangsters from New York City. The film explores themes of childhood friendships, love, greed, betrayal and broken relationships. The epic movie also did not succeed in getting an Oscar nomination.
The Godfather, Part III (1990) – The third part of the American gangster film got seven Oscar nominations but failed to win a single Award. The movie received mixed reviews with some people claiming that the third part in the Godfather series fails to entertain the audience as compared to the previous two movies.
Frost/Nixon (2008) – The movie is based on the play by Peter Morgan. The story line is based on the confrontations between two men, Richard Nixon, a former US President and David Frost, a British journalist. The movie lost most of its awards to Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire and was nominated in 5 categories including Best Motion Picture of the Year.
Fatal Attraction (1987) – Fatal attraction was a huge blockbuster in 1987 and gave audience something different to watch. Despite of being a massive hit, the movie did not win any Academy Award.
Basic Instinct (1992) – Intense violence and steamy love scenes, the movie starred Michael Douglas, George Dzundza, Sharon Stone and Jeanne Tripplehorn. The film was a major box-office hit but didn’t win a single Oscar.
Vertigo (1958) – Vertigo is a suspense-filled mystery movie. It was nominated for two Oscars. Even though it did not succeed in winning Oscar, vertigo is considered a masterpiece.
Ghostbusters (1984) – The movie is listed amongst the greatest comedies of all time and was a blockbuster hit. The special effects of the film were spectacular and also earned Oscar nomination for Best visual effects.
Poltergeist (1982) – The movie was a successful thriller of the 80s. The sequels were also released in 1986 and 1988. The film won BAFTA Award for Best Special Visual Effects but did not win any Oscar Award.
