"I want to father your children" would most probably be a clichéd sentence to use in these times; however, those exact words definitely helped Hollywood heavyweight Michael Douglas seal the deal with Catherine Zeta Jones when he used them to convey to her his intensions and convinced her to marry him.
Then on, neither an exact 25 years age difference (they share the same birth date – September 25) nor the divergent homelands could flutter their intense desire and devotion to be together.
It was in the September of 1998 that the two were introduced by Danny DeVitto at the Deauville Film Festival, France when they both were promoting Steven Soderbergh’s drug flick, Traffic.
Even though the two were featured in the film, they didn’t work together as they didn’t have any common scenes.They both started dating after that meeting and the next year, Douglas filed for divorce from Diandra, his first wife. From then on, there was no stopping to this Hollywood love story.
Douglas proposed on the eve of the millennium – December 31, 1999 in Aspen and presented the dazzling beauty with an antique engagement ring. The platinum ring had a ten carat diamond surrounded by 28 smaller stones and was reportedly worth $2 million. Later, the star studded extravaganza of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones tying the knot was witnessed by 250 guests in the Plaza Hotel, New York City.
The couple had their first child, Dylan Michael Douglas on August 8, 2000 and their daughter, Carys Zeta Douglas was born on April 20, 2003.
Michael and Caterine’s love for each other has stood the test of time and they have been true to their vows of ‘in sickness and in health’ as they went through a rough patch with Michael Douglas’s cancer, where Catherine stayed by his side. Later, she checked into Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, Connecticut for treatment for Bipolar disorder.
Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones are not only amongst the most successful Hollywood couples but their love story is an ideal for many in Hollywood and even for those outside the glamour world.
