Chinatown is a film about American neo-noir which was developed in 1974. It was directed by Roman Polanski. This film captures multi-layered story which is completely mysterious and psychological drama. Paramount Pictures released this film that covers various elements of film noir genre.

Los Angeles is the main destination where the story of the film was developed in 1937 which was developed in the inspiration of the historical dispute over land and water rights which had affected to the southern California in between 1910s and 1920s. William Mulholland played vital role in favor of Los Angeles interest in order to secure the water rights in the territory of Owens Valley.

Chinatown is also known as one of the greatest movies in the history of Hollywood. This movie was selected for the 11th Academic Awards for the best screenplay of Robert Towne. This film has cultural, historical, as well as aesthetical importance. As a result, Library of Congress chose it for the protection in the US National Film Registry.

The story of this movie begins with the history of Los Angeles from the story of 1930s. A woman hires a personal investigator with the purpose of performing matrimonial surveillance on her husband Hollis Mulwray who was serving as a chief engineer in the Department of Water and Power in Los Angeles. Hollis raised voice against the unsound structure and design of the dam which is disclosed by the tail in the public meeting. Adding more, Hollis visit just power and water sites but not mistress. Due to this reason, he is argued by every aspect which becomes a part of beautiful movie that we see as Chinatown.
