How I Met Your Mother is a comedy about Ted and how he falls in love. Everything starts when best friend of Ted's, Marshall, drops the bomb that he's going to propose to his long-time girlfriend, Lily, a kindergarten teacher. At that time, Ted realizes that he as to make a move if he is to get true love. Helping him in the chase is Barney, a friend with endless, often outrageous opinions, a penchant for suits along with a foolproof way to meet women. At that time Ted meets Robin, he's sure for love at first sight, but destiny might have something else. The series is narrated in flashbacks from the future.

The series begins in the year 2030, with Ted Mosby telling his teenage children the tale of how he met and fell in love with their mother.
The storyline he relates begins in 2005 with 27-year-old architect Ted (Josh Radnor) sharing an apartment with best friend and law student Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel) and kindergarten teacher Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan). Soon after a lengthy courtship, Marshall proposes to Lily and Ted actually starts to focus on obtaining his own true love - significantly for the disgust of his prosperous and womanizing friend Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris).
Soon afterward, Ted meets TV reporter Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) and right away falls in love with her. Though Ted and Robin date, it is made clear in the pilot episode that she isn’t his eventual bride.
